Sonia Rykiel - Iconic dress with visible seams - France Circa 1970

Circa 1970

France

Iconic Sonia Rykiel dress with visible seams, dating from the 1970s. Kurta-style slit dress and zip-up trousers in royal blue silk crepe. Shoulder yoke ties under the arms. Sonia Rykiel is considered one of the first French designers to make clothes with inverted seams, i.e. with visible exterior seams, here finished by hand. The subtle deconstruction gave her style an edge that made her work revolutionary for its time. No lining, Sonia Rykiel label. There is a tiny stain on the bottom of the dress, the only flaw worth mentioning. Very good colour and condition. Sonia Rykiel (1930-2016) was nicknamed ‘the queen of knitwear’ and invented ‘démode’ (unfashionable clothing). She championed black and stripes. She invented reverse seams, the absence of hems and linings, the first sophisticated velvet jogging suits, inscribed messages and, above all, knitwear that hugs the female form.

Dimensions: Equivalent to French size 36-38. Kurta: shoulders 42 cm, chest 80 cm, waist 73 cm, sleeves 52 cm, height 120 cm, hips 89 cm. Harem trousers: height 97 cm, waist 79 cm, hips 90 cm.
