A dramatic formal coat as a dressing gown or for evening event in black satin and violet damask signed Ville de Lyon, Naples, Raphaël Goudstikker dating from the french Belle Epoque (Edwardian period). Loose-fitting with cross-buttoning in the style of 18th century dressing gowns or Banyan robes. Long sleeves with lapels at the cuffs and a large shawl collar revealing the lining in purple silk damask with architectural motifs. A draped scarf extends from the left shoulder, held in place by four black satin buttons embroidered with gold thread and echoed on the double-breasted front. Gold tassel and fringe trimmings give this sash a solemn appearance worthy of a magistrate (?). No flaws to report apart from a few pulled threads. No stains or holes. Very good colour and condition.
