A Surrealist Hat by Isabelle Canovas in red felt and gilt bronze Circa 1980

Circa 1980

France

A stunning scarlet wool felt Hat Capeline with Surrealist inspiration by French designer Isabel Canovas dating from the 1980s. Entitled déjeuner au Stresa (lunch in Stresa), this capeline is shaped like an oval plate filled with various charms and a gilded bronze fork on one edge! A wide black elastic band and headband behind the bun or the nape of the neck reveals the Isabelle Canovas label. Very slight creasing of the base plate resting on the skull, otherwise no other defects. Good structural condition of colour and conservation.

Dimensions: Diameter 38-39 cm, hat circumference 119 cm, elastic circumference 53 cm.

Isabel was born in Paris in 1945. Her career began as a stylist for Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton from the early 1970s to 1980. In 1982, she opened her own luxury accessories company with three locations: Paris, New York and Madrid. For ten years, she created limited series of fashion accessories that set a new standard and helped shape European fashion, particularly costume jewellery. Her creations were whimsical, elaborate and made using the finest materials France had to offer. A true visionary, Isabel attracted the attention of Vogue, Figaro Madame and the New York Times Magazine. Her ground-breaking collections were inspired by her travels (Africa, Russia, Spain and Venice) and also incorporated animals, fruit and vegetables, dyes and colours.
