Cornely embroidered wool crepe coat, printed lining by Atelier Martine - France Circa 1920

Circa 1920

France

Beautiful winter coat by an unknown designer in chocolate-colored wool crepe, embroidered using the Cornely technique and dating from the early Art Deco period in France. Long, loose-fitting, tubular cut with a double-breasted closure and large smoked bakelite buttons. Stand-up collar and slightly puffed sleeves at the cuffs. The two-tone Cornely machine embroidery was cutting-edge at the time and was widely used by Jeanne Lanvin, among others. The printed cotton satin lining is reminiscent of the work of Paul Poiret's Atelier Martine, which was once under the aegis of Raoul Dufy. Note the naivety of these motifs and the use of the rose, symbol of the House of Poiret. Two paisley-style printed cotton inserts appear to have been added later to the collar. No holes or stains, except for a tiny mark on the back. Good overall condition in terms of color and preservation.

Dimensions: Equivalent to size 36 in France. Height 125 cm, shoulders 40 cm, sleeves 59 cm, chest 87 cm, waist and bottom of coat 100 cm.
