Evening kimono in taffeta embroidered with chinoiseries - France Circa 1920

Circa 1920 -1930
France

Black taffeta evening or indoor kimono embroidered with chinoiserie and Japanese motifs, dating from the 1920s. Probably made in Asia for export to the West by famous Parisian houses such as Madame Babani. Loose fit with long Kimono sleeves and a scarlet satin collar to match the lining, with an echo on the sleeves and bottom of the coat. Two inside fastenings allow it to be crossed over and closed with a large ball button. The decoration combines rows of fish in a nod to Taoism, as well as branches of cherry blossom laden with birds and temples in reference to the Japonism fashionable during the Art Deco period. A few tiny, discreet rings on the bottom sleeves but no holes, clean kimono. The silk is stable and not fluffy. The Asian embroidery work is remarkable. Good overall condition in terms of colour and conservation.

Dimensions: Mannequined on size 40 France.  Height 122 cm, sleeves 30 cm, sleeve height 49 cm, chest 99 cm, fullness 144 cm.
